If you’re looking for a book that will make your fellow college students give you a baffled look and ask, “who’s Donald E. Westlake?” Then Help I’m Being Held Prisoner is for you. The unfortunately named Harry Künt (the umlaut is important) is a chronic practical joker who gets caught up in a bank robbery plot he wants no part in. His colleagues believe it’s the perfect crime, since they all have an airtight alibi: they’re in jail. Harry has to continually sabotage the scheme with his pranks while his name is mispronounced by nearly everyone.
Westlake’s humor will keep you chuckling without detracting from the suspense of the plot. Whether you’re a seasoned crime or humor fan, or hate both but wonder what they would be like together, this is an essential read. If you’re looking for a place to start in the crime/humor worlds, this is still an essential read. Do yourself a favor and spend a couple hours devouring this masterpiece. -Madison Mathias
